18 Aug Dive in!!!
I’ve had days that I’d rather go for a bikini wax than actually put on a bikini or bathing suit – but I’ve put my bathing suit induced anxiety aside to hit the pool for a swimming workout.
Swimming is a great form of all-round exercise. There is no equipment needed, just a suit and a pool and jump in!!! (or if you are like me you slowly get in by the stairs 🙂 )
Swimming has the ability to work your body without much impact to your skeletal system.
No other workout burns calories, boosts metabolism, and firms every muscle in your body without putting stress on your joints better than a swimming workout.
Swimming helps increase muscle tone and strength, when you are swimming, you are propelling yourself through water, which is much denser than air. So every stroke through the water becomes a resistance exercise. It also puts the body through a broad range of motion that helps joints and ligaments stay loose and flexible. The repetitive motions of swimming increases muscle and cardiovascular endurance. Controlled breathing also helps to improve your cardiovascular capacity and efficiency. The exact number of calories you burn depends on your physiology and your intensity but an easy swim burns around 500 calories an hour, while a vigorous effort can burn upwards of 700.
Swimming is a great way for families to have fun and get fit together.
We still have some summer left with lots of time to get outdoors and swim. Even when the cooler weather rolls in we are fortunate to have several indoor aquatic centres that offer adult swim and even aqua fit classes severals times a day.
We are always our own harshest critic, no matter what it is, especially when it comes to our own bodies, we are definitely the toughest.
Don’t let your insecurities keep you on the side lines, be proud of yourself for exercising and for taking the steps to being healthy.
Dive in and have fun and keep it up!!
