Holiday wreath DIY

I am going to lay it all out there that I have an addiction to Pinterest. I sometimes (or always) get consumed for hours looking at images of just about anything for some inspiration. This time, I was searching ideas for a holiday wreath to hang on my front door that I could DIY. I came across two ideas that I loved and wanted to mesh the two together. One was a wreath made up of silver push pins (thumb tacks) and the second was using a frame instead of a conventional round wreath and hanging something inside of it.

I set out to my favorite supply store, Michaels, to pick up a styrofoam form that was 12″ rounded on the front and flat on the back as I did not want to spend double the time pushing pins into it. The  silver push pins came from 2 locations: Bureau En Gros and Michaels. Three pick ups later, I  hoped I had enough pins as I had no idea how to estimate how many I needed. Not to scare you, but it took over one thousand push pins to make this wreath and a lot of hours. Note to self – Don’t ever attempt this again!

Although it was very simple to do, it took a lot longer than I thought. You start at the  outer edge and create rows going towards the inner circle. As each row progresses, you want to overlap them so they do not fall out.  Every 5-10 pins, use a glue gun to glue one in so it holds more securely. I did want to add some rows of gold pins but it was impossible to have them run straight, so I decided to stick to just silver and had to remove all the gold that I had added.

I chose a frame from my closet stash of frames and painted it a light blue to match with my holiday decor and  then chose two different ribbons from my ribbon stash – one satin and one burlap to add dimension and texture. Once I completed the wreath, I simply wrapped the ribbon around and stapled it to the back of the frame so that it hung in the center then added a bow. Instead of using a standard metal wreath door hook that always gives me a hassle when opening and closing the door,I stapled the burlap ribbon to the back of the frame and ran it over top the door a used a strong magnet on the inside to hold it in place.

I am so happy with how it turned out and that it’s over…phew!
