In my experience as a designer, the number one question I get asked is, “How do I make my space look completely different?!?!?” And of course there is always the added, “on a budget.”

Be sure to choose colors that you love!

Well, the simple answer is … PAINT!

Putting a fresh coat of paint on your walls will instantly transform any space, making it feel fresh and new again.

But how do you choose the right colors, and what are the cardinal rules of painting?
Well, for the colors it depends on the room and what your style is. I like leaving public spaces neutral, and then adding in color through accessories (public spaces include: living room, dining room, family room, etc.).

Bedrooms, however, are fair game. Pick a color that you love and that will make you feel happy every time you walk into your room.

But what is the number one rule when painting any room?

Always leave the trims and ceilings white!

A mistake I see all too often is when people paint their trims the same color as their walls. A big NO NO! When you paint them a different color, the contrast between the trims and walls will actually make your room feel larger!

Once you have a fresh coat of paint on your walls, you will be able to accessorize your space in order to make it come alive … but that’s for another blog!
