24 Oct Putting that white t-shirt to good use
Last week, I talked about a great white t-shirt being a true wardrobe essential, but I neglected to mention WHY this very basic item is so important.
Here’s the thing – a white tee can really serve as the foundation for a great outfit…with a pair of jeans and a great necklace, under a blazer, tucked into a skirt, knotted at the waist – the options are virtually limitless.
Wise Woman Lisa served as my model in our photo shoot a couple of weeks ago. The idea was to show just how versatile a white tee can be.
Her outfit basics are the same in both pictures – her beloved Gap Favorite short-sleeve v-neck t, the Alisha fitted ankle jean by Not Your Daughter’s Jeans, and a great pair of ankle boots by Sam Edelman.
I love double denim, often affectionately referred to as the Canadian Tuxedo. The key is to make sure your denims are different shades, otherwise you risk looking like you should be lassoing cattle on a ranch in Montana. Here, Lisa’s wearing a dark jean jacket from Banana Republic. To add a little pizzazz to the otherwise basic white tee, jeans, jean jacket combo, we added an oversize, graduated pearl necklace. A chain and leather wrap bracelet gives the whole look a little edge.
In outfit number two, Lisa switched out the jean jacket for a chocolate brown, faux fur vest. The star of the show is this vibrant yellow leopard-print scarf from Tory Burch. As it gets colder, she can easily layer the jean jacket under the vest since bare arms in Montreal fall isn’t really an option. And since that scarf is a statement in itself, we replaced the pearls with a more subtle leather and silver necklace by jewelry designer Jackie Elharrar.
So, stop thinking of your white tees as gym wear or your go-to on a lazy Sunday.
Start thinking of them as the foundation of a great outfit.
